Holidays at OGM
Holidays are magical at Old Great Marlborough throughout the year, thanks to the combination of indoor and outdoor activities on site and the many attractions that the local area has to offer.
Grosmont Grosmont village hosts its own castle (free entry), a brilliant local pub and an elegant tea shop. Aside from the history, the castle grounds are a perfect place for a picnic and kids love to explore the ruin. Afterwards a leisurely pint of local beer or cider in the friendly pub or a delicious dairy ice cream from the tea shop should give you enough energy to climb the hill back to OGM!
Hereford The beautiful cathedral city of Hereford is a great place for a day out; after visiting the famous Mappa Mundi and the cathedral itself, you could take a stroll along the cobbled streets of Church Lane which host a wide array of independent shops and cafes. The city stages regular farmers’ markets in its traditional, traffic free, town centre where you can pick up local specialities (such as the famous Herefordshire cider!) and artisan produce.
Abergavenny The market town of Abergavenny is most famous for its superb food festival, held annually in September and visited by a range of top chefs and hundreds of small producers. Alongside numerous events and demonstrations, the festival is capped off by a huge party in the grounds of Abergavenny’s castle, with music, fireworks and, as you would expect, brilliant food! Year round the town has lots to offer, including a lovely little cinema, a traditional market hall and a lively theatre. Abergavenny and its surrounding area is also home to some outstanding restaurants featuring Michelin starred chefs, making it a truly ‘gourmet’ town!
Hay-on-Wye Hay-on-Wye is world renowned for its literary festival, held in May/June each year. Alongside authors and literary critics the festival hosts comedians, stages live music and has a great atmosphere. Outside the festival Hay is a charming town with some great bars, cafes and restaurants, and, of course, no shortage of second hand book shops!
The Local Countryside OGM is in a superb location when it comes to outdoor activities, being very near to the Black Mountains and, a little further afield, the Brecon Beacons National Park, both of which offer fantastic walking and mountain biking. Parts of the rivers Wye and Usk are perfect for canoeing, fishing (we can arrange fishing trips for our guests, please enquire on booking) or indeed ‘wild swimming’. The Skirrid Mountain is a particular favourite of ours, a towering peak which hones into view on the road to Abergavenny, it’s a reasonably short, and tough, walk up but the views from the top are outstanding!
Local Food and Drink Alongside the aforementioned restaurants, food festivals and farmers’ markets, the area surrounding OGM is particularly rich in local produce. Some highlights include a brilliant butchers in nearby Ewyas Harold (the neighbouring post office gets daily deliveries of superb fresh bread also, all the components for a great bacon sandwich!), Pepe’s farm shop, on the road to Abergavenny, which is also well worth a visit, selling wonderful fruit and vegetables, with ‘pick-your-own’ in the summer months alongside local cream and, surprisingly, outstanding Italian olive oil! Additional ‘foodie’ delights include a famous cider museum in Hereford, where you are, of course, able to sample some of the produce, and, a slightly longer drive away, an award winning Welsh whiskey distillery (the whiskey itself is widely available in local stores).
